2009: Lina Ron, a Prominent Chavez-Supporter, Jailed for Attack on TV Station

Lina Ron was well-known for her radicalism, street activism, and grassroots activities. She was the founder and President of the Venezuelan Popular Unity Party (UPV), an anti-imperialist left revolutionary party which supported President Hugo Chavez. She ran a cultural center, hosted alternative television programs, and was “one of the strongest activists in the electoral campaign for the re-election campaign of President Chavez”[3].

On August 3, 2009, she led a small group of people in a tear gas attack on the offices of the pro-opposition television station Globovision in La Florida, Caracas [1]. They clashed with police and made their getaway on motorcycles. It was thought that the attack may have been revenge for an attack of vandalism by opposition supporters against the La Voz de Turmero 97.7 FM community radio station in Santiago Marino municipality in the early hours of August 3 [2].

On August 4 President Chavez announced that Lina Ron had been arrested for her participation in the tear gas attack. Chavez said he would not tolerate these types of actions by anyone. “There is no alternative and she must receive the full weight of the law,” he said [2]. She was jailed for three months [1].

Lina Ron passed away on March 5, 2011 at the age of 51. Chavez spoke at her funeral declaring her “eternally alive… the highest tribute a revolutionary can receive… because women like Lina never die….Lina you will always be alive in our battles and the victories of the people.” [3]
