2015: President Maduro was Honored by Black Activists in Harlem

President Maduro spoke at the UN’s 70th General Assembly Meeting in New York on September 29, 2015.While in New York, Maduro was the Keynote Speaker at the People of African Descent Leadership Summit held in Harlem’s National Black Theater on September 28. Black intellectuals, activists and political leaders honored Maduro, praising his government’s education and health care policies as an alternative and possible remedy to US policies they said foster racism.[1]

Maduro stressed the importance of strengthening international ties in the fight against racism and historical injustices committed against African descendants.

Democratic State Senator Bill Perkins presented Maduro with a proclamation from the New York Senate praising his leadership: “We recognize that in the person of Nicolas Maduro, the President of Venezuela, we have an exceptional leader.”

Also speaking at the completely-filled auditorium was cofounder of #Black Lives Matter, Opal Tometi.
