2015: Venezuela was Declared as: “Palestine’s Most Important Ally”

During a visit to Venezuela in May 2015, Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said that “Venezuela is Palestine’s Most Important Ally.” [1]

On April 27, 2009, Venezuela officially recognized Palestine, being the first country in the Americas to do so. Venezuela sent eighty tons of medicine, water and food and thirty doctors to Gaza in 2009.[2] Venezuela was the first country in the world to allow Palestinians to enter without obtaining a visa beforehand. Venezuelan universities adopted a program granting Palestinian students scholarships to study free of charge. (In 2011, 37 Palestinians studied medicine in Venezuela’s Latin American School of Medicine).[3]

In December 2012, Venezuela was the first country to receive an official Palestinian delegation after Palestine was recognized by the United Nations as a non-member observer. In 2014, Venezuela sent 68 tons of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

In 2014, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro signed an agreement creating a new corporation, Petro-Palestina, through which Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA would send oil to Palestine at a subsidized price. Maduro committed to sending an initial shipment of 240,000 barrels of oil.[4]

The Venezuelan Government provided a $15 million grant to the Palestinian Authority for the construction of an ophthalmic hospital to provide advanced eye care. The hospital opened in 2018 as the Hugo Chavez Ophthalmological Hospital in Ramallah, West Bank. In 2020 the Hospital was temporarily converted to serve coronavirus patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
